Similar practices exist in other cultures, including the Chinese tradition of penzai or penjing from which the art originated, and the miniature living landscapes of Vietnamese Hòn non bộ. The Japanese tradition dates back over a thousand years. The Japanese loanword quot;bonsaiquot; has become an umbrella term in English, attached to many forms of potted or other plants,[2] and also on occasion to other living and non-living things. According to Stephen Orr in The New York Times, quot;the term should be reserved for plants that are grown in shallow containers following the precise tenets of bonsai pruning and training, resulting in an artful miniature replica of a full-grown tree in nature.quot;[3] In the most restrictive sense, quot;bonsaiquot; refers to miniaturized, container-grown trees adhering to Japanese tradition and principles.Purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation for the viewer, and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity for the grower.[4] By contrast with other plant cultivation practices, bonsai is not intended for production of food or for medicine. Instead, bonsai practice focuses on long-term cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees growing in a container.A bonsai is created beginning with a specimen of source material. This may be a cutting, seedling, or small tree of a species suitable for bonsai development. Bonsai can be created from nearly any perennial woody-stemmed tree or shrub species[5] that produces true branches and can be cultivated to remain small through pot confinement with crown and root pruning. Some species are popular as bonsai material because they have characteristics, such as small leaves or needles, that make them appropriate for the compact visual scope of bonsai. The source specimen is shaped to be relatively small and to meet the aesthetic standards of bonsai. When the candidate bonsai nears its planned final size it is planted in a display pot, usually one designed for bonsai display in one of a few accepted shapes and proportions. From that point forward, its growth is restricted by the pot environment. Throughout the year, the bonsai is shaped to limit growth, redistribute foliar vigor to areas requiring further development, and meet the artist#39;s detailed design. The practice of bonsai is sometimes confused with dwarfing, but dwarfing generally refers to research, discovery, or creation of plants that are permanent, genetic miniatures of existing species. Plant dwarfing often uses selective breeding or genetic engineering to create dwarf cultivars. Bonsai does not require genetically dwarfed trees, but rather depends on growing small trees from regular stock and seeds. Bonsai uses cultivation techniques like pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting to produce small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature, full-size trees. Thank you Seicho!!!I contacted Seicho to make a custom calligraphy artwork for my husband's birthday. She was very prompt in answering my questions and setting up the listing. The piece turned out beautifully and my husband loves it!I ordered this Ichi-Go Ichi-E calligraphy as a gift for a special friend to commemorate the one year anniversary of our meeting. It came in a beautifully wrapped package of golden wrapping paper and red strings, making it look very classy. My friend went into tears when she received it as the packaging and the calligraphy itself were very beautiful. Thank you Seicho for taking such a good care of this gift, even to the smallest details! Unfortunately I didn't get my friend to take a picture of the package before she opened it. I will definitely recommend you to my friends who need similar gifts in the future because your work is just so beautiful and you take very good care of everything, even down to the packaging. What a beautiful piece we received. Extremely well packaged and even ready for gifting if you wanted. So much care into keeping the art safe and beautiful while in transit. We had extremely quick shipping but we do live fairly close. We are working on a custom piece as well bc we were so happy and seicho has been very communicative and attentive. Highly recommend her and her work. Many thanks!
Since reopening our centres, over 35,000 visitors of all ages have been able to enjoy some much needed Covid-secure outdoor learning and fun. Our online courses and resources have supported outdoor learning throughout last 18 months, but now it’s great to welcome real as well as virtual visitors.
My staff have said how good it is to hear children again, see them engage with nature first hand and enable them to make the most of their time with classmates and teachers in beautiful surroundings.
There is no substitute for the real thing, and many will have had enough of learning by being cooped up indoors, staring at a screen. Time spent in our stunning locations with our expert staff helps engage every learner as they connect with nature, teachers and peers.
Despite changes to course content, assessment and exams for 2022, schools are still being encouraged to offer outdoor learning and fieldwork opportunities. We all know the value of learning by first hand experiences that consolidate knowledge and fix it in the memory. Learners are still required to answer fieldwork questions in exams. We encourage you to come to our centres so that they can experience fieldwork first hand, learn by doing and develop knowledge and skills needed for work or further study.
There isn’t a lesson in the school day that can’t be enriched by connecting to nature, or a subject in the curriculum that can’t be enhanced by outdoor learning.
We know that schools, customers and parents need reassurance about the measures that we have put in place to keep everyone safe. If you would like to know more about what to expect when you come for a visit, take a look at our page Covid-19 Keeping you safe. You will also find details of our Book with Confidence scheme.
You don’t have be part of a school group to enjoy what FSC has to offer whether it’s a simple holiday or a Family Adventure, our Stay with Us breaks offer clean, simple accommodation in our stunning locations. For nature and wildlife enthusiasts there are opportunities to learn about the identification of songbirds or solitary bees on our place based courses.
At the start of a new academic year, it’s good to welcome you, thousands of muddy boots, the excited chatter and the buzz of learning to our centres once again.
