This beautiful AAA Mexican Cantera Opal has gorgeous fresh orange translucency and subtle green color play.

Polished to a high shine, this stunning, natural Opal is domed on the surface and flat on the back.

This “orangesicle” Opal focal is secured in a 925 sterling prong setting and hangs from an oxidized, sterling chain that is accented with a faceted firey Welo Opal:

Fire opal is associated particularly with Mexico and is mined in the Mexican states of Queretaro, Hidalgo, Guerrero, Michoacan, Julisio, Chihuahua and San Luis Potosi. The most important mines in Queretaro were discovered in 1835 and are still producing today. Cantera opal is a trade name used for fire opal that has been cut with its host rock intact.

Caring for your Opal

Solid Opals are a soft stone, roughly the same hardness as glass (around 6.5 on Moh’s hardness scale), so it is important to treat your opal carefully in order to avoid damaging it. Remove your opal jewelry before any doing any activities that may scratch or break your Opal (outdoor work, sports, moving furniture, etc.).
Solid opals do just fine in water though. In fact, most precious opals contain about 5-6% water.
Hydrophane Opals, such as Welo, will absorb water and go clear. Once it dries, it’s fire and color will return.
Opals may crack if subjected to very dry conditions or rapid changes in temperature. Try to avoid exposing Opals to very high temperatures or low humidity extremes.
Don’t clean your Opal with soaps or harsh chemicals as this can damage your stone. Simply rinse with water and wipe clean with a soft cloth.
